All this talk about the $3/$15 CVS coupon got me to thinking. When I first saw it, I was very excited. When I read the fine print, I was a little confused, but so many of the couponers that I have been following were so excited about it, I figured it must be ok to use it.
But there was that feeling in the back of my head that this felt "dirty". I commented on a blog that reviews comments before posting, and my comment was ignored (I figured it was because I touched a sore spot...), so I felt even more uncomfortable with the coupon.
Then The New Frugal Mom posted on how she was uncomfortable using the coupon, so at least I knew I wasn't alone in my thoughts.
So I wrote CVS.
Here's the letter I got back:
Dear Sarah Gomez,
I have looked into this, and you should be able to print out that coupon and use it in a CVS/pharmacy location. Each store has the final decision as to what coupons it accepts, but I did verify it was acceptable to print this out and use it.
Also, you may want to look into the Washington Post Points program if you are a Washington Post subscriber as well as an ExtraCare member, as we are one of the participating vendors. Please visit:

Thank you for contacting CVS/pharmacy ExtraCare. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact us either by e-mail or by calling (800) 746-7287.
Best Regards,
Bill Koch
CVS/pharmacy ExtraCare Representative

Sarah- Thanks so much for getting this clarified. You did what the original blogger spreading the word about it should have done in the first place.
I appreciate your effort!
You are not alone! Thanks for your efforts. I won't even print the $4 off $20 because I don't feel right about it. I signed up for their emails, used it once, and that's it!
I agree with you... I had wondered about it as well. I guess the next question I have is, do you think the CVS person who replied to you feels it is ok to be printed and used more than once?
I have sent off another email and am awaiting a response to that very question :)
Thanks Jessica
Sarah - I really respect you opening up as the commenter. I will say that I have shared this coupon with my readers and have no issues with using it (and I am a faithful christian) because I personally get subscriptions to several papers online and know retailers do this all the time.
I always tell people that if you have issues with whatever content you read at my site or others, then do what you feel is right - no reasoning or logic from anyone else is going to help you on judgement day!
Oh - and please respond with what CVS says on using multiple times. I appreciate you taking the time to research it further!!
Hi Sarah! I didn't realize that there were people out there who weren't sure about whether or not it was ethical to print out this coupon and use it.
I, like Andrea, subscribe to a couple of newspapers who have their issues available online for readers across the country, and this has been done before and has been acceptable practice at other retailers, so I felt comfortable with it and never gave it a second thought.
I would always encourage people to do what they feel is right, and if they aren't sure, investigate it until you are comfortable with what "right" is.
But since I seem to be the original blogger spreading the word about this coupon, I appreciate you clarifying CVS' stance on it's usage, and I'll update my blog with the letter you recieved and link back to you, for anyone out there who may also be unsure. :) Thanks for the info!
